LEARN HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THOSE OLD BOOKS

BATON ROUGE – Papermaking, bookbinding artists and an expert on paper conservation will offer free advice to visitors when the Louisiana Book Festival returns to the State Capitol area on Saturday, October 4 for a daylong celebration of All Things Book. All events are free and open to the public.

“With more than 150 authors and panelists all discussing the central of reading and writing and the overall love of books, we feel it’s a natural to present programs that actually deal with the paper and books themselves,” said Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu, whose office oversees the State Library System. “It’s fun to read. I think being able to see paper being made and books actually being bound is fun and fascinating as well.”

“The Book Festival is designed to spread the joy of reading and promote a love of books,” said State Librarian Rebecca Hamilton. “This year we can offer the owners of older and rare books an opportunity to learn how to preserve their treasures,” she said.

Renee de Ville of de Ville Book & Paper Conservation in New Orleans will offer professional advice on how to repair and care for photographs, books, and other works on paper. She will be available from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the reference area of the State Library of Louisiana on North Fourth Street.

Leslie Koptcho, an associate professor of art at LSU, will use her students to demonstrate traditional hand papermaking and bookbinding techniques from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at a tent set up in front of the library.

The Louisiana Book Festival is co-sponsored by the Louisiana Center for the Book; the State Library of Louisiana; the Department of Culture, Recreation & Tourism; Office of Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu and the Louisiana Library Foundation. The Louisiana Book Festival is made possible in part by a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. Complete information on the 2008 Book Festival is available online at www.LouisianaBookFestival.org or by calling (225)-219-9503.
